Home 4 2

I posted recently about a dream where people living rough could be provided with a warm comfortable place to call home and be given the opportunity to care for a four legged friend from a pound or shelter – so that they too, had the opportunity for a warm comfortable place to call home.

Both live solitary lonely lives – confined by concrete pens and mesh in an animal shelter or perhaps trapped by the circumstances or problems in their lives that culminated in them living on the streets.

Imagine how the lives of both could be enhanced. The dog – or cat – gains a person – a companion – a warm and loving touch, a body to curl up with, kindness, care, love, and affection.  Exercise, interest, socialisation – a purpose.

The person gains a connection, a companion – a reason for being, a reason to keep going, unconditional love without judgement, warmth, affection, protection – a Mate!

Shelters are full of animals with no-one to love them. There are lots of people – with no-one to love. There is surely an opportunity to create something special here –

Good for the community ✔️

Good for the individual ✔️

Good for the dog or cat ✔️

If we could find a place they could live cheaply, safely and warmly – they would both gain so much.

The person could be subsidised to care for the pet by redirecting funds away from maintaining staffing numbers to care for and clean up after, animals in shelters.

I plan to explore this concept further to see whether it is – in fact – viable and whether we can get a pilot program established in partnership with key stakeholders from both the homeless people sector and the homeless pet sector.

I am also advertising a volunteer role on Volunteering SA & NT.  If I can find a passionate retired person who has time to help me, I hope to source and apply for grant funding to employ the person to take this to the next level and see whether we can – turn a dream – into a reality.

Short Description: Home 4 2 is a conceptual program considering matching pets languishing in shelters or pounds with people experiencing homelessness. If a cheap, comfortable housing solution could be found for both, there is potential to enhance the wellbeing and health of both companion animals and people experiencing homelessness. Individuals could be paid a small amount per week to care for the animals with funds being redirected from shelter care staffing (ultimately). As well as both gaining a companion, the lives and health of both could be improved.
