Bequests – Leave A Gift In Your Will

Leave a Gift in your Will

If you are a pet lover, you may wish to consider leaving a gift in your will to Hope Springs Eternal (ABN: 89 148 407 744) to assist us in continuing to provide support and services that “Change the world for one dog at a time” through our small breed dog rescue and “Help keep pets and people together” via our Paws and People and Pay It Paw-ward Programs. Each gift makes a difference. Your gift will ensure that we can continue to help pets and their people. After you have provided for your loved ones, you may consider leaving a gift in your will in one of the following ways:

A Fixed Sum of Money

You may wish to leave us a fixed sum of money (known as a pecuniary bequest). This type of gift does not allow for changes of circumstance or inflation. You may wish to include a clause to provide for the amount to be adjusted to reflect the Consumer Price Index (CPI).

An example of a suitable suggestion clause is:
“I give [insert amount e.g. $1,000.00] to Hope Springs Eternal Dog Rescue, Rehoming & Retirement Inc of 427 Springs Road, Mount Barker Springs South Australia (ABN .89 148 407 744)
The receipt of the chief executive officer, treasurer, secretary or public officer for the time being of Hope Springs Eternal Dog Rescue Inc. is a sufficient discharge to my executors in respect of this gift.”
If you wish for the amount to be adjusted to reflect the CPI, you should then include:
“the amount referred to in paragraph [insert paragraph number] is to be adjusted for inflation from the date of this will to the date of my death according to the movement of the CPI between those two dates.”

You can leave a specific item of value

You may wish to leave us a particular item (known as a specific bequest), which may include a piece of property, specific shared or a personal item, which can be sold to support our work. However, if that asset does not form part of your estate on your death, it cannot be gifted to Hope Springs Eternal Dog Rescue Inc.

A suitable suggestion for this type of clause is:
“I give [clearly describe the item e.g. my property located at 123 Smith Street, Adelaide in the State of South Australia Certificate of Title Register Book Volume 1234 Folio 567] to Hope Springs Eternal Dog Rescue Inc of 427 Springs Road, Mount Barker Springs South Australia (ABN 89 148 407 744).
The receipt of the chief executive officer, treasurer, secretary or public officer for the time being of Hope Springs Eternal Dog Rescue Inc is a sufficient discharge to my executors in respect of this gift”

You can leave a share of your Estate

A good way to help is to leave a proportion, or the whole of what is left in your estate after you have provided for your loved ones. This type of gift (known as a residuary request) is easy to add to an existing Will without interfering with any specific sums you have left to family or friends. It also has the advantage that it will not be eroded in value by inflation over the years. Just 1, 2, 5% or more of your estate can make a difference.

A suitable suggestion for this type of clause is:
“I give [insert amount e.g. 50%] of the residue of my estate to Hope Springs Eternal Dog Rescue Inc of 427 Springs Road, Mount Barker Springs South Australia (ABN 89 148 407 744).
The receipt of the chief executive officer, treasurer, secretary or public officer for the time being of Hope Springs Eternal Dog Rescue Inc is a sufficient discharge to my executors in respect of this gift”

The Residue of your Estate

Once you have made provision for your family and after payment of your debts, funeral or testamentary expenses, you may wish to gift the whole of the residue of your estate to Hope Springs Eternal Dog Rescue Inc.
A suitable suggestion for this type of clause is:
“I give the whole of the residue of my estate to Hope Springs Eternal Dog Rescue Inc of 427 Springs Road, Mount Barker Springs South Australia (ABN 89 148 407 744).
The receipt of the chief executive officer, treasurer, secretary or public officer for the time being of Hope Springs Eternal Dog Rescue Inc is a sufficient discharge to my executors in respect of this gift”

Giving in memory of a loved one

A special way to honour a loved one when they pass away is by offering friends and family the opportunity to make donations to Hope Springs Eternal Dog Rescue Inc. in lieu of flowers. Your gift will assist with the ongoing vet care and rehabilitation of companion animals in our care.

How to organise donations

When arranging the funeral with your Funeral Director, please advise them of your wishes. They can contact us for a supply of donation envelopes that can be available at the service and also advise family and friends unable to attend by placing our details in the funeral notice.   We send a letter of receipt to each person who makes an In Memoriam donation.

Your Pets and Companion Animals

Hope Springs Eternal Dog Rescue Inc can provide for the care of pets, through foster homes, where the owners are no longer able to suitably care for the animal and who are prepared to make a financial donation to cover the cost of their ongoing care. Persons wishing Hope Springs Eternal Dog Rescue Inc.to accept responsibility of the care of their pet following the death of such persons are required to make provision by way of a bequest and authority for Hope Springs to exercise such care by way of a clause in their Will. This means that your pet becomes the sole responsibility of Hope Springs.

A suitable suggestion for this type of clause is:

“I wish to give my [describe pet(s)/companion animal(s)] and the sum of [insert amount i.e. $20,000.00] to Hope Springs Eternal Dog Rescue Inc of 427 Springs Road, Mount Barker Springs South Australia (ABN 89 148 407 744) and I express the hope, but without imposing any trust or binding obligation on Hope Springs Eternal Dog Rescue Inc.that by accepting this gift that they will look after [describe pet(s)/companion animal(s)].

The receipt of the chief executive officer, treasurer, secretary or public officer for the time being is a sufficient discharge to my executors who are not bound to see the application thereof”.
You should discuss the various types of bequests with your solicitor who can ensure the correct clause is entered into your will.
