Casey came into our care as her young owner moved interstate for work and could not take Casey with her.\u00a0 Casey had been her best friend for 11 years.<\/p>\n

When I went to pick Casey up – she snuggled right into my shoulder and I felt an instant connection with her.\u00a0 I wrote her this poem:<\/p>\n

I LOVED YOU THE MOMENT I MET YOU<\/strong><\/p>\n

I saw your sweet face and your very sad eyes<\/p>\n

Before I saw the massive lump on your very small size.<\/p>\n

I picked you up, felt the touch of your nose,<\/p>\n

You put your head on my shoulder and snuggled in close.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It was at that moment that our hearts connected,<\/p>\n

I so wanted you – to feel protected.<\/p>\n

You lay in my car and you gave a big sigh<\/p>\n

The state you were in – made me want to cry!<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I chatted to you and I told you just wait,<\/p>\n

Life will get better – it\u2019s gonna be great!<\/p>\n

We\u2019ll sort out this mess and you\u2019ll have lots of fun,<\/p>\n

You\u2019ll eat lovely food – and can have a good run.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

When we bathed you and I saw and felt the full extent of your state –<\/p>\n

Reason told me – we might be too late.<\/p>\n

I lay awake for hours – thinking that the wait.<\/p>\n

Had very likely signed and sealed – a sad and tragic fate.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

But hope springs eternal and I did dare to hope,<\/p>\n

Though tough surgery in your state – how would you cope?<\/p>\n

With hope in my heart and prayers on my mind,<\/p>\n

We went to the vet – to see what they\u2019d find.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Some signs were good – your heart beat was steady,<\/p>\n

Blood flow was good – perhaps you were ready?<\/p>\n

But hope was shortlived – and tests today found –<\/p>\n

The illness had already gained major ground.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Oh honey I wanted so very much more for you,<\/p>\n

I wish there was something more we could all do.<\/p>\n

But we\u2019ll wrap our love around you –<\/p>\n

Love will carry you along<\/p>\n

And when we say Goodbye to you<\/p>\n

You\u2019ll not doubt that you belong.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Your little life does matter<\/p>\n

To us you\u2019re so special<\/p>\n

You exchanged a piece of your heart<\/p>\n

With the hearts of one and all.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

You\u2019ll never be forgotten<\/p>\n

You\u2019ll live on in our hearts<\/p>\n

We will talk of you – and memories mean<\/p>\n

We\u2019ll never be apart.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

A Hope Springs family member – you will FOREVER be<\/p>\n

And in our special garden<\/p>\n

Your soul will frolic – Free.<\/p>\n

Sadly, we realised quite quickly that unattended mammary tumours meant that Casey’s time with us would be short.<\/p>\n

We set about to ensure that the time she had left was fun and enjoyable for her.<\/p>\n

She loved a wander down the back and a good roll in the grass.<\/p>\n

She also loved going to Laratinga Wetlands for a walk – where she would take her time and have a good sniff of everything.<\/p>\n

We also took Casey to the beach for an outing – where she met lots of other dogs and people, paddled in the water, dug in the sand, chased seagulls, ate vanilla ice-cream and watched the sun go down.<\/p>\n

She enjoyed her food and was a happy little dog – right up until the end.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I held you today\u2026\u2026\u2026..<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I held you today as you passed away – I really wanted \u2013 to beg you to stay<\/p>\n

But I looked in your eyes \u2013 and I heard you say \u2013 I\u2019m sorry but \u2013 today is the day.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

We had a long cuddle and I stroked your ears – I felt your heart and you felt my tears<\/p>\n

I whispered \u2013 it\u2019s okay honey, I know you\u2019re worn out \u2013 And you don\u2019t understand what the pain\u2019s all about<\/p>\n

Thank you for allowing me \u2013 to be \u2013 your friend – And to be there for you \u2013 as you come to the end.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

On the way to the vet – I patted your head – And I wished we could go \u2013 somewhere else instead<\/p>\n

You turned your head to me – And I looked over to you – I didn\u2019t know If I could do – what you needed me to.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It\u2019s such a hard thing – to knowingly bring a life to a close – As others who\u2019ve had to do it \u2013 would know<\/p>\n

Right now you\u2019re here \u2013 but when we enter the door – Your light and your spirit \u2013 will be no more<\/p>\n

The emptiness on leaving is hard to explain – Your collar in my hand \u2013 the only thing to remain<\/p>\n

That you\u2019re now gone forever is hard to comprehend – The knowing that I\u2019ll never see you again<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I so hope you were happy \u2013 and knew you were cared for<\/p>\n

Though our time was short \u2013 we loved you so much more<\/p>\n

I hope you\u2019re now rolling in grass that is silky – with blue skies above and clouds that are milky<\/p>\n

Where butterflies dance without a care \u2013 and the gentlest of breezes ruffles your hair<\/p>\n

I hope there are flowers as pretty as you \u2013 in lots of colours and every hue<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I so hope it\u2019s true that I\u2019ll see you again \u2013 when our time down here comes to a close<\/p>\n

Until then my sweet \u2013 you\u2019re a puppy again \u00a0– you can frolic freely \u2013 there\u2019s no pain \u2013 now \u2013 you know.<\/p>\n
